Beginning in Oil Painting (Adults)

Location: Torpedo Factory Art Center (105 North Union Street, Alexandria, VA)

Description: This class provides a foundation for observation-based painting in classical realism. Students learn about the material, value, proportions, and colors. We will explore paintings of still life and landscape. Classes include a combination of demonstrations, step-by-step directions, and discussions on art appreciation.

Duration: Nine Sessions

Price: $270 (Basic painting materials required.).

Harmony in Paint: Classical Portrait and Figure Painting(Adults)

Dates: Tuesdays, Apr. 14th - May 19th, 10 am to 12:30 pm

Location: McLean Project for the Arts (Will meet onsite and at McLean Community Center (1234 Ingleside Ave, McLean, VA 22101)

Harmony in Paint: Classical Portrait and Figure Painting

Inspired by the timeless traditions of classical painting, this course focuses on portrait and figure painting from observation. Most sessions feature a live model posed with a musical instrument or expressive, dance-inspired gesture. Students will strengthen their understanding of composition, value, color, brushwork, edge control, and design while exploring both alla prima and glazing techniques. Classes include demonstrations, art appreciation, and individualized critique. Students may also choose to work from landscape references or still life arrangements. This class is intended for advanced beginners or intermediate students. Welcome for drawing and oil painters.

Independent Study & Mentorship in Painting

Finding Your Vision in Paint (Adults and Teens)

Date: Saturdays from 10 am to 12 pm, Jan. 24th - Mar. 14th, 2026

Location: Rockville, Maryland

Description: This course welcomes students of all levels who wish to pursue a personal artistic goal or project. Whether you’re interested in portraits, landscapes, or still life, you’ll work in a relaxed, supportive environment focused on observation-based painting. Instruction emphasizes composition, brushwork, edges, value, and overall design.

Stephanie offers individual guidance and personalized lesson plans to support each student’s growth.

Duration: Eight sessions

Tuition: $392 (students bring their own supplies)

Join Stephanie Chang and Judith Brown for an exhilarating immersion into the harmony and rhythms of the Italian landscape. Our workshop will provide step-by-step instructions to help you capture your inspiration through painting and drawing. Be captivated by the architectural elements, townscapes, sculptures, fountains, figures in a landscape, and more. Observe and interpret the dynamic relationships within the pictorial space, and the importance of values, edges, and color, in ways that will immediately improve your work. All levels of painters will benefit from this workshop, from fearless beginners to professional artists.

Plein Air Painting Class (Adults)

Dates: Spring 2027, Wednesdays from 9:30am to 12pm

Location: McLean Project for the Arts (1234 Ingleside Ave, McLean, VA 22101)

We will study both on-site and from a photograph of a scenic landscape, learning how to simplify the complex elements that make up the scene into a solid composition. Further, we will introduce a few watercolor techniques and explore oil painting by utilizing tools such as brushes, palette knives, and Catalyst wedges to highlight value, color, light patterns, edges, and perspective to create our interpretation of the landscape. Classes will include a combination of demonstration, discussion, and art appreciation. We will meet on-site in different locations each week. Supplies: Oil Painting and/or Watercolor

Elevating Your Vision: Intermediate/Advanced Painting (Adults)

Dates: Spring 2027, Tuesdays, 10 am to 12:30 pm

Location: McLean Project for the Arts (Will meet onsite and at McLean Community Center (1234 Ingleside Ave, McLean, VA 22101)

This course is designed for intermediate to advanced students eager to deepen their oil painting practice. Inspired by the art of old masters in classical realism, this workshop centers on observation-based painting through portrait, figure, and landscape. Students are led to refine their paintings through composition, brush strokes, edges, value, and design. Most sessions will feature a live model. Students interested in landscapes may work from photographs or set up a still life as an alternative.Classes will include a combination of demonstration, art appreciation, and critique. 

Class Package: 6 lessons @ 2.5 hrs

Introduction to Oil Painting (Adults)

Description: This class provides a foundation for observation-based painting in classical realism. Students learn about the material, value, proportions, and colors. We will explore paintings of still life, landscape or animals. Classes include demonstrations, step-by-step instructions, and discussions on art appreciation.

Duration: Eight Sessions @ 2.5 hrs.

Price: $310/$290 MCC residents  (Basic painting materials required.)

Portrait Connection Program

Community Outreach- Portrait Drawing at Assisted Living Facility

Date: TBA

Location: Rockville, Maryland

Description: This class offers a foundation in observation-based figure and portrait painting in classical realism. Students will study the anatomy of the human face and figure in costume while learning essential concepts such as gesture, value, and proportion. We will explore masterpieces from the Renaissance to the Modern era, drawing inspiration from renowned artists and styles to create our unique portrait paintings.

Classes will include a combination of demonstration, step-by-step direction, and discussion/art appreciation. Additionally, if the situation arises,
We will visit residents at the Assisted Living Facility in Washington, D.C., as part of our community outreach program, Portrait Connections.
